Overview
The Grand Tableau is the most comprehensive Lenormand spread, using all 36 cards to provide detailed insights into multiple areas of life. It is ideal for in-depth analysis, long-term predictions, and seeing connections between different aspects of a situation.
This chapter covers:
How to set up the Grand Tableau
How to read key positions (Significators, Houses, and Directions)
Techniques for breaking down the reading into smaller sections
6.1 Setting Up the Grand Tableau
Step 1: Shuffle & Lay Out All 36 Cards
Use a 9x4 layout (9 rows, 4 columns) or 8x4+4 layout (8 rows, 4 columns + 4 cards in a separate row).
Cards are placed in order from left to right, top to bottom.
Step 2: Identify the Significator Cards
Man (28) / Woman (29) → Represents the querent (person being read for).
If reading for someone else, use the card that fits their gender.
Where the significator lands in the spread gives insight into the querent’s situation:
Top rows → Focus on the future, ambitions.
Middle rows → Current situations, day-to-day matters.
Bottom rows → Past influences, subconscious matters.
6.2 Understanding House Positions
Each position in the Grand Tableau corresponds to a specific Lenormand card (e.g., the first position = Rider, second = Clover, etc.).
A card falling in its own house (e.g., Heart in the Heart house) → Strong, pure meaning.
A challenging card in a positive house (e.g., Snake in the Clover house) → Trouble interfering with luck.
Example:
If Ring lands in the Tower house, it may indicate a long-term contract or a formal commitment.
Tip: Print or reference a Lenormand house chart when reading the Grand Tableau.
6.3 Reading the Querent’s Surroundings
The closest cards to the Man/Woman card provide immediate insights into their current energy.
Cards above → What’s on their mind.
Cards below → Subconscious influences.
Cards to the left → Past influences.
Cards to the right → What’s coming next.
Example:
If Letter is to the right of the querent, important news is coming soon.
If Coffin is below, the querent is still processing an emotional ending.
6.4 Using Directional Reading in the Grand Tableau
Positive cards to the right → Good things ahead.
Negative cards to the right → Upcoming struggles.
Challenging cards behind (left side) → Past issues fading.
Cards in front of (right side) the querent → What they are moving toward.
Example:
If Sun is ahead, success is coming.
If Clouds are ahead, uncertainty lies ahead.
6.5 Key Areas in the Grand Tableau
Area | What It Reveals |
Querent's position (Man/Woman card) | The querent’s current energy. |
House positions | Extra layers of meaning based on where a card falls. |
First 3 cards (Top Left) | The main theme of the reading. |
Last 4 cards (Bottom Right) | The outcome or future direction. |
Fate Line (Last Row in 8x4+4 Layout) | The final message or destiny. |
Corners of the Spread | The overall tone of the reading. |
6.6 Breaking Down the Grand Tableau
To avoid overwhelm, break it into sections:
Method 1: Read in Rows
Each row tells a different aspect of life:
Row 1: Current focus and external influences.
Row 2: Daily life and relationships.
Row 3: Challenges and underlying issues.
Row 4: Subconscious matters and past influences.
Method 2: Read in Columns
Column 1 (far left): The past.
Middle columns: The present.
Column 9 (far right): The future.
Method 3: Find Key Themes
Look at clusters of similar cards (e.g., Heart, Ring, and Lily = Relationship focus).
Identify repeating symbols (e.g., Fox near work-related cards = Job deception).
Practice Exercise: Interpreting a Grand Tableau
Lay out all 36 cards.
Find your Significator card (Man or Woman).
Identify the first 3 cards (main theme).
Check the fate line (last row) for the final message.
Read the cards closest to the Significator for immediate insights.
